SAFE Security Review—High-Risk Option
Often, our homes are left unguarded as we go about our daily lives and responsibilities. A lot of factors go into deciding which provider we want to look after our houses.
One of these is the experience that other customers get. As we’re more likely to trust a company that other people trust, providers invest a lot in making sure that their customers are happy.
However, the same can’t apparently be said about SAFE Security. Customer reviews are overwhelmingly negative, implying a bad experience.
But, setting aside these reviews, is SAFE Security a good choice? Let’s find out in our SAFE Security system review.
SAFE Security’s History and Reputation
The security company was established in 1988. Throughout its 30 years of experience in the industry, it gained a substantial coverage of 25 states.
It also grew to be the 13th largest home security company in the United States. This was a ranking made by SDM Magazine in 2016 based on the recurring monthly revenue.
The company has gained recognition over the years as well. It’s currently UL Approved and uses a CSAA Five Diamond certified central monitoring station. It partners with Alarm.com to provide security solutions to its customers.
Aside from this, it also provides services for other dealers. This is done through its Dealer Program that provides funding services, equipment, and the like. All of these speak of the company’s strong service network.
The company has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since 06/20/2012 and has been given a rating of A+. Despite all of these, however, SAFE Security has received an overwhelmingly negative reception from its customers.
Customers gave it a massive 98% negative rating, with most complaints filed against the product, the service, and billing.
In Yelp, another customer review website, the company received 92% 1-star ratings, displaying overall customer dissatisfaction.
Plan Pricing and Services
SAFE Security offers both wired and wireless monitoring systems. It doesn’t give much information about its monitoring plans though. However, it does offer other varying plans that seem to be add-ons.
The company merely lists devices that are commonly included in its plans. These devices are:
- Security System Keypads
- Door and Window Sensors
- Motion Detectors
- Monitored Smoke Detectors
- Carbon Monoxide Detector
- Panic Buttons
- Remote Entry Key Fob
- Alarm Sirens
As of writing, the company offers a so-called Internet Special Plan. This seems to be the only definite monitoring plan that’s listed on its site.
The plan includes a $99 wireless alarm system. The equipment included are control panel and keypad, motion sensor, 2 door and window contacts, interior siren, remote key fob, and yard signs and stickers.
SAFE Security also offers two Extended Service Plans. These plans deal with the equipment, devices, and parts you have.

The company also offers two types of add-ons: additional services and additional equipment. The following are its alarm system upgrades:
- Smoke and fire detectors
- Glass break sensor
- Water level sensor
- Freeze sensor
- Cellular backup
Its additional services are dubbed as “Optional Services” and include the following:
- Two-way voice. This allows you to talk to a monitoring station operator through an intercom. This is helpful if you can’t use your phone for some reason.
- Guard Service. If the station receives an emergency signal from the house but there is no response from you, it can dispatch a Guard Service to personally check on your property. In case the Guard Service determines an emergency, it will remain on standby until authorities arrive.
- Open and Close Reports. This allows you to know who armed or disarmed your system and when through a monthly report. The feature is especially handy if you have a lot of people going in and out of your house or business.
- Cellular Backup Module. This keeps your system connected to the monitoring station if your phone line is compromised or damage.
It’s unclear how long the warranty of the equipment is as the information isn’t written on its website. Customers also reported that monthly pricing can increase without notice, although there is no pricing information on the site too.
A website comparing alarm company monitoring pricing, however, puts the company’s base monthly charge at $25 with upfront costs starting at $99.
Top Tips for Buyers
If you already have a monitoring system in place, SAFE can monitor your alarm for three months for free.
Meanwhile, with regards to its Extended Service Plans, getting the slightly more expensive Lifetime of Service and Value Plan would be more cost-effective. This is because for the small price upgrade, you’ll be receiving a couple other perks.
As the company faces a lot of negative reviews, comments, and complaints from its customers, it’d be best to carefully deal with it. Read the fine print of the contract and make sure to ask important questions.
This is all the more important as SAFE contracts can last up to 5 years and automatically renews for consecutive one-year terms.
Cancellation and Transfer Policies
SAFE has a cancellation fee equal to 100% of your remaining contract. If you want to cancel your contract before it auto-renews, you have to send a letter requesting the cancellation at least 30 days before the expiration of your contract.
If you want to cancel your contract with SAFE, you’re in for a long ride. Customers complained that cancellation alone is a complicated process that can go on for months.
Although it doesn’t offer clear information on moving, the company will help you move. It offers “special, money-saving offers” for your new alarm system installation and activation. You also get incentives if the new homeowner of your old house chooses SAFE.
What’s the Bottom Line?
There are a lot of SAFE Security company complaints. Some of these include generally bad customer service, no monitoring of equipment, problems and dissatisfaction with the services, and difficulties in cancellation.
All these complaints make SAFE Security a tough choice to make. Couple these with its long contract periods and high rates of customer dissatisfaction and you get a bad combination.
All in all, if there are other security providers in your area, it might be better to use them instead.
